JAMES, HENRY (1843-1916), novelist, became a friend of Kipling and gave Caroline Balestier away when they were married. He was one of the first men of letters in England to register Kipling's remarkable qualities, referring to him privately as 'the star of the hour' and 'the great little Rudyard'.
This remained Kipling's home until his death. His delight in the Sussex countryside and its villages, his respect and affection for its people, and his interest in its history are reflected in many of his later writings - among other examples, in the stories 'They', 'An Habitation Enforced', 'Friendly Brook' and 'The Wish House', the poem 'Sussex', and the children's books Puck rif Pook's Hill and Rewards and Fairies.
