Planets, though subject to their own highly chaotic formation processes, were expected to end up on nearly circular orbits, because the net result of all of the wild collisions needed to form a rocky planet such as Earth, whacking Earth first one way and then the other, was thought to average out to a roughly circular orbit.

At that distance, this behemoth was a warm Jupiter. Mercury is strongly heated by the radiation from the Sun, which is seven times stronger at Mercury’s distance than at that of Earth’s orbit. We now had a family of planets reminiscent of the Three Bears, with a hot Jupiter, a warm Jupiter, and a cool Jupiter.
