More recently, digital pair-gain systems have been developed based on the digital copper pair transmission systems used for basic rate ISDN and on digital speech compression techniques. These allow up to eight users to share the same copper pair. Higher speed digital transmission, up to a few megabits per second, can be used on a large percentage of existing copper pairs, because the majority of copper pairs are relatively short. Copper pairs can also be used in sophisticated asymmetric transmission systems where a relatively low-speed upstream link is used to control a higher rate downstream service, possibly even on a different medium.
